Solo Christo 3

Worship of Mary is arguably foreshadowed in the book of Jeremiah: But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven… (44:17).  When man’s feelings and mystical inclinations take the lead, there is no end to the distortions and corruptions of God’s infallible, unchangeable word.  Having grown up attending a Roman Catholic church I know first-hand the extent to which it thrives upon a mysterious, unknowable form of experiential ignorance.

Whenever we exalt a created man or woman or angel we are in trouble, and need to be warned as in Iconium Sirs, why do ye these things? (Acts 14:15) or Patmos See thou do it not (Rev 22:9).  That is not to say that Roman Catholicism is the sole cause of evil in the long history of the church, for the later Reformational wars in Europe, and persecution of sincere believers who didn’t subscribe to the sacral society of the day, all go to show that the outwardly religious man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upwards (Job 5:7).

As we scrutinise our Bible, let us approach it reverently, being wary of many intellectual minds which have gone astray, either stepping outside of or trampling upon its hallowed ground, being corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ (2 Co 11:3).  For that matter let us not be those who in our pride say we love Christ but do not love His lowly, uncelebrated servants who solemnly preach His word every Lord’s Day, for He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me (Jo 13:20).
